演講簡介:
Victor Nee’s journey into sociology is intertwined with his family’s history and his personal experiences as an immigrant. Born to a Taiwanese mother and a father who was a member of the delegation accepting Japan’s surrender in China during World War II, Nee’s early life was shaped by the intersection of global historical forces and his family’s migration to the United States. Growing up in southern California in the 1950s, he confronted questions about his social origins as a racial minority in a predominantly white community. This autobiographical lens informs Nee’s sociological work, spanning decades of research into institutional change, market transitions, and the dynamics of social mobility. His inspiring contributions, including the theory of market transition and studies on assimilation and economic emergence, exemplify the synthesis of personal history and sociological inquiry. This talk introduces Nee’s forthcoming work in the Annual Review of Sociology, which weaves together his family history, intellectual development, and pioneering studies into a cohesive narrative of discovery. Nee’s story offers profound insights into the transformative power of institutions and the enduring pursuit of sociological explanation.
